User experience concept development for the electric compact crossover SUV
January - April 2024
Overview
The Fisker PEAR, a compact electric crossover SUV which stands for "Personal Electric Automotive Revolution," showcases Fisker's vision for an affordable, tech-forward electric vehicle designed for urban environments.
It features an advanced infotainment system with a large touchscreen display up to 17.1 inches and a fully digital instrument cluster. The PEAR incorporates the Fisker Blade, an in-house designed high-performance computer system that manages the vehicle's connected features, enabling real-time seamless graphics and fast interactions.
The power of the Blade computer allowed us to elevate the user experience by significantly reducing technical limitations, creating a more responsive and intuitive interface.
For the Fisker PEAR, we drew inspiration from minimalistic, tactile elements to create an intuitive experience that appeals to our primary target group of younger drivers. Our goal was to develop a user interface that breaks conventional thinking, creating a mobility device that feels both delightful and clear.
When developing the screen layout for the Fisker PEAR, we incorporated feedback from existing Fisker Ocean users and research findings to enhance the user experience.
We organized the layout into three distinct levels: map, control panels, and content area with apps. The map serves as a persistent base layer on all screens, addressing users' need for quick access to navigation.
Control panels, including the header, main navigation, and HVAC drawer, are positioned for easy reach while driving. These elements are designed to stand out from the content while blending with the black bezel, ensuring they're available when needed without being distracting. The main navigation features a bright selected state for quick identification of the current screen.
The content area appears above the map, covering half the screen when a main navigation item is tapped. Its acrylic background adds depth to the interface and facilitates easy exit from non-critical panels while driving.
The instrument cluster in PEAR is seamlessly integrated beneath a diffuse fabric layer. Utilizing a high-contrast display behind this fabric, we developed a hidden interface that reveals essential driving information when activated. This includes speed, battery level, drive mode, and regenerative braking meter. When the vehicle is turned off, the display becomes invisible, maintaining the clean aesthetic of the interior.
